IT'S TIME FOR GORE TO CONCEDE

Democracy is on hold. The United States of America is in limbo. The Senate and the House of Representatives are split right down the middle -- teetering on the edge of gridlock and anarchy. The highest office in the land is up in the air.

This political stalemate is dividing America into black and white, Republican and Democrat and young and old. If this political nightmare doesn't end soon it will be exceedingly difficult for the eventual winner to unite this country.

The sunshine state of Florida holds the key. Bush wins Florida on Election Day by a whisker. Bush is still the victor in Florida after an automatic recount mandated by state law. The overseas absentee votes still need to be tallied, but they will undoubtedly only add to Bush's slender lead.

I did not vote for Bush. His political ideology is anathema to me. I didn't vote for Gore either, although his views are more aligned with my own. However I feel that Gore should concede -- if not now -- then certainly as soon as the Florida election results are certified by the authorities.

Gore's objections to the Florida election are patently specious. He should follow the class example of "Tricky Dick" who, for the sake of our democracy, conceded an election that, by contrast, he had every moral right to challenge.

Shady lawyers should not determine the next president of the United States. Voters who were too stupid to vote correctly the first time should not select the next president. No more re-counts. No more re-votes.

It's time to honor the results of Election Day. George W. Bush has the needed electoral votes to claim victory. I call upon Al Gore to stop being a "win at all costs" politician and to rise to the level of statesman by conceding defeat for the good of our ever-fragile democracy.
