Hi sandintoes,

He made Dornnon(sic) lose his seat in Calif.,

Linda Chavez won that seat in 1996 in Orange County for two reasons.

Number 1: Bob Dornan is a hateful, vindictive and racist man.

Number 2: His district was changing, as it continues inexorably to do, as more and more Latinos and other minorities move in and replace the lower-middle class, resentful whites who were Mr. Dornan's main support.

Linda Chavez was just re-elected to Congress in the California 46th District for her third term. She is bringing home the bacon for her constituents and they are supporting her with 60% of the vote.

Bob Dornan did not lose his place in Congress because of Bill Clinton, though I'm sure Clinton was happy to see him go. Dornan lost because he became an anachronism in time and place.

On another note, I recall the late '70's much as you do. I never forgave Ford for letting Nixon walk. But I agree with Greg on Ford's status in today's GOP. He would be marginalized by the Lott-Armey-Dixie-cans as an effete Northerner expressing far too much tolerance. He's another anachronism, in a different sort of way.

It's funny, I think your recollection of the '70's is a lot clearer than your understanding of the events of the last 4 years. Your comments about welfare queens indicate you've been off the reservation and lost in your own reveries for quite a while. If you look at the provisions of the welfare reform bill that Mr. Clinton signed into law:

you'll see that your rhetoric about welfare is simply not dealing with reality.
