Even at the introduction of Athlon, AMD announced big plans for moving into 2-way SMP servers and above. That suggested to me that 760 (and 760MP) chipset development was already underway when Athlon was first released.

Why it should it be taking so long, I don't know. Perhaps AMD had a shortage of R&D resources, and they decided to siphon off engineers from the 760 chipset group.

I'll quit now before I go too far into speculation mode.

AMD dun had du AffWiper runnin' in duh SMP mode in da lab back in Joone 'a 1999.
