Night: Not only a court, but I will bet you that the Fla election committee or the Fla governor has the authority; my reasoning has be already posted: The only thing to add is that Bush's argument is that the machine is better than the man. But that offends people, remember John Henry the steel drivin man versus the Locomotive. But, this is probably true and would eliminate Carol What's her Name (the Blond Older Lady on the recount committee) from electing the Next president of the United States with the invention of the "dangling" chad, as opposed, of course, to the "hanging chad" which must be distinguished at all costs from the "pregnent chad". You keep runnin' them ballots and there will be no more Chads.. ...The Chadmiester.. .......The Chadarooski ... .........The Chadster ___________________________________________________________ ...The commission in palm beach ordered a manual count because, in the words of the statute, the 'outcome of the vote' may be effected. The Florida law on elections is surprisingly detailed on these points. But the only way that the Palm Beach Vote Tally will effect the 'outcome' is that it would be the only county, or less than all counties, hand counted. So logically, the only way to legally determine the "outcome" is to hand count all the ballots. There is no fraud, there is not even a little hankie-pankie, which is the object of the electoral laws of the State of Florida. I think a court if asked to would order a recount of the entire state based on the above reasoning. Message 14789108

RE: bitterness. I wasn't fully aware in the early 1960's, but from what I've been told, the rancor that followed the Nixon/Kennedy election lasted some time.... Considering the current difficulties facing the 2 parties at coming to ANY kind of common ground, I don't think this election will lead to anything but more of the same partisanship REGARDLESS of either candidates' ability to reach out. Gore followers will likely not accept the hand of Bush in most cases, nor will the Republican House and Senate acknowledge the legitimacy of a Gore presidency. Unfortunately, the best we can do is allow the recounts to take place and hope that both sides can see that sitting back and working together is the best solution to eliminating the problems this situation has provided.
