In GOP controlled Volusia county.......Volusia County, which includes Daytona Beach,
began its recount Sunday after a one-day delay.
Election officials there struggled to explain the
discovery of an additional 100 to 300 ballots in
one of its precincts.

"We have a problem," said Michael McDermott,
chairman of the county canvassing board.
Election officials were investigating whether a
mechanical or mathematical error led to the extra
ballot count, he said.

The board hoped to finish the count by 10 p.m.
Monday...............................................................Bush Gains 33 Votes Net So Far in Florida Recount
(Update2)
By Stephen Cohen

Deland, Florida, Nov. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Election officials in Volusia County,
Florida, said the Republican presidential candidate, George W. Bush, gained a
net 33 votes in the first day of recounting ballots.

The county is working against a Tuesday deadline for certifying its ballot count
and had hand-counted 58 of 172 precincts, officials said. At first, the tally
showed Democrat Al Gore gained a net 19 votes in 57 precincts. Later, another
precinct said an apparent machine failure meant 320 ballots were excluded. They
were hand counted and Bush picked up 52 votes.

``It's these inconsistencies that are the reason we're doing this hand count,'' said
Jack Young, one of the Democratic observers of the process. ``This is a fluid
process.''
