This might come as a surprise to you but I agree with much of what you said. Making money is the important part of this game we play and preserving capital by cutting losses is the most imperative rule if you want to continue playing.

If the MOOD of the market indicates that even a great stock will drop, I will sell and buy back later. No matter how solid the stock is I can preserve my capital by selling early and rebuying later.

My point was that gauging the MOOD of the markets to determine your time to sell becomes an emotional decision as it is no longer based on the fundamentals of a company. And for a long time here on SI I have contended that emotions (momentum) is the driving force behind stocks today, not fundamentals.
