One of the few valid (IMHO) uses of technical analysis is that it can be very useful in identifying the beginnings of a new bull.I'm talking about things like TRIN , not charts. However, I don't find them useful in detecting the waning days of the bear, so that's why I use dollar averaging. Meaning that I'm always too early for some of these purchases, and too late for others, but I'm still getting fairly good prices. A sign that the bottom may not be far away is that today seeing declines in companies that so far have been mostly immune to the decline-example EMC. Also large declines on low volume are a sign of exhaustion, if not capitulation. Of course this might just be wishful thinking, and we could be headed for another 1973 or 1930, but probabilities point to just another cyclical bear. Despite the heartburn, I've survived several of these.
