Tom,

The American electoral system has been a longtime joke. Since the 1800 election stalemate and the Rutherford B. Hayes fiasco in 1876, there has been abundant evidence that we don't have a high-quality democratic structure in place for electing Presidents. Direct election, perhaps with a runoff election in the event no candidate receives a majority would be both simpler and fairer. But I suppose many would oppose it as un-American.

Though the unresolved election situation contributes to a negative psychological climate, it doesn't really make the economy substantially worse. Whether Bush or Gore takes over, you will have a fundamentally business-friendly administration in place, so I think the likelihood of foreign investors abandoning U.S. markets is very small. That's why I think it offers a great buying opportunity. The real concern all along is that the economy slows into a recession. That's a possible, but it is increasingly discounted by the recent market declines.
