we all know that if there was any logistical problems with collection, our better half would be happy to receive the funds

i've been noticing that whenever these political types (be they candidates or campaign managers) use the word obviously, the facts are quite the opposite.

i used to work with a gal who would fall back on the use of that term whenever she felt she needed to strengthen her argument. the minute i heard her start throwing the word obviously around, it was like a red flag had just popped up. and i knew instantly that she knew her position was weak and in need of help. obviously in need of help.

yep, obviously is a clear cut case of the speaker underlining for us that part of his or her speech that is less credible, or in doubt.

no different, really, than listening to a salesman yapping away and pretty soon you hear the infamous words, well to tell you the truth. that salesman is underlining the lie for us! it's perfect. one time i found myself in one of these incredible conversations, and directly the other party said to me, "can i be honest with you?". and i said, "heck no, why change on me now!"

obviously i was having too much fun

:)
