Yes, the voting system could stand to be much improved. I think the internet is the answer, but it will take some time.

As far as hackers go, things are never perfect. If the penalties are made steep enough for voter fraud, maybe that would be a good deterrant.

As far as people resenting getting assigned a number; it's not really an ID number for you like a SSN number. It's basically a "voting access code". It's just to let you vote one time. Every election, every registered voter gets a new code. Maybe sometime, we'll have retnal scanners on every PC.
