Alex Benik, a networking analyst at the Yankee Group, said Sycamore needs to show it can generate revenue from new customers. Sycamore relied heavily on Williams Communications for about 60 percent of its first-quarter sales, the company said.

Sycamore Chief Financial Officer Frances Jewels told analysts during a conference call that company revenue is expected to grow as much as 205 percent during 2001 to more than $500 million. She also said revenue should grow as much as 75 percent during fiscal year 2002.

In addition, Sycamore earnings in 2001 should range from 23 cents to 24 cents a share, or as much as 3 cents higher than the high-end of Wall Street estimates.

Benik disagrees with reports that telecoms will slow their spending for gear in building high-speed networks.

``These carriers can't afford to blink,'' Benik said. ``Some of these companies have traffic growing at 300 and 400 percent a year. They need optical technology to meet that demand. I don't see a slowdown in optical demand whatsoever.''
