AMD figured out that there is no way it can compete against powerful itanium so why try.....

ps itanium will always beat mustang if not by performance then by the accumulated delay time.

So, Chuck, what is your explanation for AMD's dropping of Mustang?

Since Mustang was being tested by compaq, the chip itself was ready. My guess is that no big OEM wanted to sell such systems, and so AMD decided it wasn't worth it to launch with only small supplier support. I think the problem again was a platform one. The Athlon has a proven track record, but the VIA sucks, and AMD-760 is too new.

Yes it does matter- AMD could have made much mulla.

Tenchusatsu,

<So, Chuck, what is your explanation for AMD's dropping of Mustang? >

No customers! Given there is no 760MP it probably didn't make sense for AMD management to keep pushing it especially since those same resources can be put to use for something else.

<Sure, AMD didn't plan on having a 4-way or 8-way platform in 2001, but that didn't stop them from keeping Mustang on the roadmap until now.>

But there was a 2-way platform though. Now there is only a 1 way platform until mid-2001.

<And some AMDroids were licking their chops over the possibility of sticking large-cache Athlons onto 2-way platforms. Why does it not matter now?>

I think the problem is spelled Foster. By having 760MP go into Q2 2001, AMD has a huge mind share problem. It looks to me AMD's key customers decided not to fight this war.

For over a year, Intel was highly exposed. For AMD to have a SMP running in labs in June 1999 and not being able to get something to market until 2001 is a case of one huge missed opportunity.

Chuck

It doesn't matter now for the SAME REASON that the X-BOX design win (or loss !!) doesn't matter !
