Alcatel Introduces Industry's First Plug And Play
Broadband Access Server; Low Cost, Compact Broadband
Access Server Delivers High Value Revenue Opportunities
For ISPs

MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA--NOVEMBER 14, 2000 - 14:58 EST
Extending its global leadership in DSL
(digital subscriber line) technology, Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and
NYSE: ALA) today introduced the Alcatel 7404 Broadband Access
Server (BAS), the industry's first plug and play broadband access
server. With its breakthrough pricing and compact size, the 7404
BAS -- Alcatel's latest addition to its award-winning broadband
access server family -- offers a wide range of high-value revenue
opportunities for Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

The Alcatel 7404 BAS truly defines plug and play functionality: no
hardware provisioning is necessary for installation. With the 7404
BAS, the service provider uses simplified provisioning tools and
an intuitive interface to configure user policies and services.

"The Alcatel 7404's plug-and-play capability was an important
factor in our decision," said Chuck Durant, central office manager
for the Derian Telephone Company. "Within thirty minutes, we had
the 7404 BAS installed, saving us significant installation and
training costs, and speeding both our time-to-service and our
time-to-profit."

The Alcatel 7404 BAS offers narrowband ISPs an unprecedented
low-cost entry point into the broadband market. Aggregating DSL,
cable, and wireless broadband, the full-featured, carrier-class
7404 BAS has the processing power to run even the most complicated
network. Offering centralized management and high value services
in a unique one-rack unit form factor, the Alcatel 7404 BAS is an
ideal solution for ISPs with small footprint requirements.

"The needs of small to medium-sized ISPs have been insufficiently
addressed with the broadband access solutions in the market
today," said Bruce Barton, vice president of product line
management at Alcatel. "Narrowband ISPs - as well as wholesalers
and CLECs - need to differentiate themselves with
revenue-generating services while minimizing costs and operational
disruption. Alcatel's 7404 BAS makes all this possible. It
provides all the features of leading competitors at a fraction of
the cost."

The 7404 BAS additionally provides unique revenue opportunities to
a wide range of service providers. Larger providers can scale
their networks even further by pushing IP intelligence out to the
edge. Fiber-based CLECs can provision broadband services to
subscribers in multi-tenant buildings.

"Alcatel continues to build high performance broadband
technologies, and they're empowering narrowband ISPs to capitalize
on opportunities in the DSL market," said Tim Weiss, senior
consultant at Telechoice. "With the 7404 BAS, Alcatel offers ISPs
a dynamic, market changing, affordable entry point for
provisioning broadband access and services."

The 7404 BAS is the newest member of Alcatel's award-winning
broadband access server family and provides carriers with unique
revenue opportunities through the following high-value services:

/T/

-- Wholesaling: Provisioning services through multiple access
providers.
-- Service selection: Subscribers dynamically choosing their
services and providers.
-- Virtual Private Networks: Creating logical IP partitions for
corporations and services.
-- Differentiated Internet services: Using QoS to create tiered
Internet services.
-- Multi-tenant applications: Providing Internet connectivity to
different users in the same building.

"Alcatel has designed the 7404 BAS to help us quickly capitalize
on DSL market opportunities," said Mike Crews, Central Office
Manager, NorthEast Florida Telephone. "The 7404 BAS makes
provisioning painless and allows us to provide access to multiple
Internet Service Providers. We are now rolling out plans to
additionally take full advantage of the value-added services the
7404 BAS supports."

Pricing and Availability

The Alcatel 7404 BAS is available immediately with support for up
to 2000 subscribers, four 10/100 ports, and one of three ATM
interface options (DS3, OC-3 multi-mode, or OC-3 long reach). The
starting price for the 7404 BAS is $17,000 USD. The Alcatel
broadband access portfolio also includes the Alcatel 7410 with
support for up to eighty thousand subscribers. The 7410 BAS is
available in a ten or sixteen-slot chassis at a starting price of
$40,000 and $100,000 USD, respectively.
