Your point is well taken. The difference between a 1950's Presidency and the current time is that the press is now so unforgiving and vicious. Truman, Eisenhowewr, Roosevelt, and Kennedy made remarks that reporters heard but would never think of reporting. A true off the record statement.

Today politicians view reporters the same way we view analysyts. Useful only if they serve our purpose.

When Eisenhower became president the joke at that time was.
Roosevelt proved it was dangerous to have a president, Eisenhower proved we didn't need a president, and Truman proved that anybody could be president.
