Srexley: I admire your commitment to the concept that, with hard work, we all can improve our lot in life. If it were only so.

"Right" has nothing to do with success or failure. Doors remain closed for too many in this country. Just look at the ranks of who runs Big Business in this country. Little has changed over the past 50 years in terms of the racial-religious-political-gender mix. That ain't my opinion. That are the facts.

Lest we not forget, Colin Powell climbed to the top ranks of the military thanks to an early boost from a program called "affirmative action." Clarence Thomas happened to be a black conservative in the right place at the right time. He is no Thurgood Marshall.

If the American dream were simply a matter of "hard work," then 19 African-Americans would not have voted for Gore on Tuesday for every one that voted for Bush.

A huge racial divide still exists in the U.S. of A. Bill Bradley tried to address this in the primaries, but few people would listen to his message.
