Petz,

<Do I detect that you think there was, ahem, a certain amount of sandbagging going on last week?>

Not really! For all practical purposes we will not see anything beyond 1.2 for Q4. Any thing above that will be limited edition. As I said there is no infrastructure to move past 1.2G this quarter. We need Palomino or FSB133DDR for that - which is Q1.

<I don't really care if there is a standard rollout in a week, but if Anand and others get 1.33-1.4/266 DDR TBirds or Palominos to benchmark alongside P4's, there will be half a dozen stories from ZD, Cnet, CMP Techweb and others saying that the P4 is slower in most benchmarks, starting November 21.>

I suspect that's what we are going to see. It could be next week or next month but I am convinced that there is going to be a limited edition launch before the year is over.

Chuck

AMD probably tries a slightly different approach: They won't release new products on Monday but let the benchmarks speak for themselves (P4 will win some but so will Athlon). After some weeks, when the hype has settled down, they will "paper launch" Palomino and take back the performance crown. IMO this is the best way to play the game against Intel's PR machine.

Petz,

I don't really care if there is a standard rollout in a week, but if Anand and others get 1.33-1.4/266 DDR TBirds or Palominos to benchmark alongside P4's, there will be half a dozen stories from ZD, Cnet, CMP Techweb and others saying that the P4 is slower in most benchmarks, starting November 21.

Agreed. I would also like to see the power consumption numbers for those chips. There will be 2 new variables to look at:
-These chips will be Dresden only
-They will be 133 MHz FSB

Does anybody know if the 133 MHz FSB parts have higher power consumtion than 100 MHz chips? I guess the difference is probably very small.
