Merrill Lynch Bridge Loans to Telecom Clients Triple in 3rd Qtr

Washington, Nov. 13 ( Bloomberg ) -- Merrill Lynch & Co. during the third quarter almost tripled the amount of bridge loans extended to telecommunications companies, a possible symptom of investor reluctance to back the sector.

...............

Even so, investment banks such as Merrill usually like to have bridge loans repaid quickly, perhaps within a matter of weeks. During 1999, Merrill never had more than $68 million in bridge loans outstanding at the end of a quarter.

The increase in Merrill's exposure this year shows that ``the banks offering the bridge loans are being forced to carry them for a longer period of time on the balance sheet,'' Butte said.

Merrill said this year's increases in bridge financing ``are primarily due to new loans to several telecommunications companies,'' according to the SEC filing. The company didn't identify which clients received the loans.

In early October, the wireless company MainStream PCS Holdings LLC postponed a plan to sell $300 million of high-yield notes. The company ran into more bad luck at the end of the month, when Deutsche Bank AG canceled a commitment to lend MainStream more than $1.4 billion, including a $435 million bridge loan.
