BTW (OT), I think the networks are finally getting to the heart of the election situation. In particular, I heard MSNBC discussing with guests what I think is an appropriate (and finite) course to follow. Gore obviously wants to win. His side had the savvy to quickly request hand recounts in four strongly Gore counties in FL. During even the machine recounts, Gore has been picking up votes in those counties. Not surprising given his percentage of the vote there. But really this is not fair to Bush, since the state was close overall, and Bush would apparently be in the predicament of not being able to request recounts in his stronger counties. It's clear to me that Gore wants an accurate count of FL, and so would (or should) agree that one fair solution to FL is a hand recount of the entire state. One week or so once begun; not IMO an unreasonable length of time for such a significant election. Also, BTW, it should be clear to most that a careful hand recount will be the most accurate. These people are set up in teams of two counters (one Democrat and one Republican), with one from each interested political party observing the two counters. Not much room for foul play. So, it will be slow but fair. The cases of alleged civil rights abuses and the ballot confusion has to be dealt with outside of any potential ability to affect the outcome of the election, essentially for the good of the country. Those issue are important to follow through on, but waiting for resolutions would prohibit the progress of our government for too long. As for the outcome of FL, if Gore wins, Bush then has to decide whether and in what order to request recounts of the other close states (he could possibly request one or none, which could end this election relatively soon). OK, so we have to wait another week or two beyond FL if Bush does request hand recounts in other states. Not so bad, IMO. As long as the end is indeed in sight, as it seems to me. As for the opposite possibility of Bush winning FL after a hand recount, well then Gore has to decide whether or not NH is worthwhile as a recount (hopefully not). Not such a bad resolution, really. The winner can honestly feel fairly, if narrowly, elected, and the loser can know just how close it was. Randy
