Futures markets point to upside potential

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - Stocks are set for a bounce at the start of trading Tuesday with investors taking a calmer approach following Monday's tumultuous trading activity that initially saw shares fall sharply, only to recover the bulk of the losses by the end of the session.

December S&P 500 futures climbed 4.70 points, or 0.3 percent, and were trading roughly 7.40 points above fair value, according to figures provided by HL Camp & Co. Nasdaq futures, meanwhile, gained 41.00 points, or 1.4 percent.

In shares trading before the official start of trading, Hewlett-Packard (HWP) edged up 63 cents to $34.75 after Monday's rout that saw the stock lose 13 percent of its value.

The 10-year Treasury note slipped 1/8 to yield ($TNX) 5.78 percent while the 30-year government bond was off 6/32 to yield ($TYX) 5.85 percent.

Tuesday will see the release of October retail sales, seen rising by 0.1 percent. Retail sales grew by a hefty 0.9 percent in September due to a jump in auto sales. and view Economic Preview, economic calendar and forecasts and historical economic data.

In the currency arena, dollar/yen climbed 0.3 percent to 107.85 while euro/dollar added 0.2 percent 0.8585.

Dealie - tune into CNN - looks like the Palm Beach Co. Elections Board is holding up the recount based on a legal opinion recently received. They're not gonna start counting without an instruction from the Atty. General - If the court doesn't move the 5:00 deadline back, it looks like we'll have a new president elect today.
