Puck,

Re: Symbian Crystal (Nokia)

Thanks for the link. I had not seen it.

One interesting paragraph related to the Symbian roadmap. Release 6 has just been released. Release 6.1 ("Pearl" support) is due out early 2001 and eventually 6.2 will make it out the door.

"Release 6.2 unites support for CDMA, W-CDMA and TDMA air interfaces and vastly more ambitious Bluetooth support, chiefly for accepting inbound requests, but also for object and application exchange. Although 6.1 will handle the US-centric air interfaces, the low level implementation is left to the developer, whereas 6.2 provide one high level abstracted API"

This is good news for US business travellers for whom GSM is not a practical alternative from a user perspective.

<< Anyone bets on whether or not this Crystal device will have GPRS capability? >>

Although it seems logical that it would, I am not going to bet on it. <g>

Re: Crystal - Photos Of The New Psion Phone

<< Nokia announced (although we haven't confirmed this) that their Crystal device will be debuted at its mobile internet bash in Prague later this month >>

Might look like this.

"Her er drømmetelefonen! Tastaturtelefon med GPRS fra Psion"

wapland.com

Photo at top of page and bottom (not Moto in middle)

Also from the Register:

theregister.co.uk

"Pictures of Psion's successor to the Series 5 have been published by Norwegian site Wapland."

"Of course the pictures could simply be a creative use of Photoshop, inspired by the Nordic custom of drinking hallucinogenic reindeer urine - if the dubious but enduring myth can be believed. According to this myth, reindeers are fond of munching fly agaric, which is noted for its psychoactive properties, although why the Laps would take this circuitous route to delirium when the mushrooms themselves are lying around is beyond us. Maybe they're just taking the piss."

"It's the first time we've seen instances of the Crystal reference design, a half-VGA (320x240) keyboard-based specification on which Nokia and Psion will base the successors to their 9000 and Series 5 ranges. This may or may not eventually appear as a Psion 'Series 9' - and since it's every bit as much a phone as a PDA, Psion could well go for a new brand altogether."
