DJN: DJ Nymex Natural Gas Futures -2: Followthrough Buying

HOUSTON (Dow Jones)--The New York Mercantile Exchange December and January
natural gas futures contracts quickly roared to contract highs on the
opening Tuesday morning.
Forecasters are predicting colder weather through November, a trader said,
"with the coldest temperatures we've seen in about three years."
At 9:35 a.m. EST, the December contract was up 18.7 cents to $5.885 per
million British thermal units from Monday's $5.698/MMBtu settlement. January
rose 16.4 cents to $5.87.
February also posted a contract high on Tuesday at $5.56/MMBtu, up 13.4
cents.
The front months continue to peel away higher than back months. Between
December and March 2001, the differential is 70 cents.
Traders expect a quick push to $6/MMBtu and perhaps as high as $6.23/MMBtu
for December on the sustained cold forecasts and the continued buying from
Monday's Access and over-the-counter markets, where the $6 target was
attained.
Over-the-counter trading, which started at 9 a.m. EST (1400 GMT), saw the
December contract opening around $5.87-$.5.88/MMBtu.
During evening Access, the December contract traded between
$5.651-$6.00/MMBtu, with the last deal done at $5.92/MMBtu, up 22.2 cents.
At the benchmark Henry Hub in south Louisiana, physical gas was seen trading
around $5.82-$5.83/MMBtu Tuesday morning, compared with Monday's
$5.55-$5.62/MMBtu closing range.
Support is at $5.78 and $5.61, with resistance at $5.87, $6.00 and $6.232.
