Finnish telecom equipment maker Nokia said on Monday it would upgrade the GSM network of Irish mobile phone operator Esat Digifone for an undisclosed sum.

"Nokia will deliver upgrades to Digifone's existing network as well as supply new equipment for enhanced coverage and capacity," Nokia said in a statement, adding Esat Digifone was a new customer.

Deliveries of GSM 900 and 1800 base stations and other equipment have already started, and the upgrade is expected to be completed by year's end, it said.

Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) is the world's most widely used digital mobile phone standard.
