Pieere: The extra spectrum allocated in Europe is reserved for 3G services, defined as UMTS WCDMA solutions. Since this incorporates a WCDMA air interface on a GSM core network, CDMA will have a huge growth opportunity in Europe, Japan, Korea, and other countries that are preparing for WCDMA solutions.

To suggest that i Mode is a declaration of success for GSM in Japan seems far fetched given that DOCOMO is preparing for an aggressive rollout of WCDMA in Japan, Korea, and possibly in the US if they can sell the WCDMA concept. Also, you have VoiceStream influencing the migration to WCMDA in the US as their buyout becomes imminient.

Bottom line, WCDMA & CDMA2000 are the platforms to enhanced data services that would attract companies like Cingular, not GSM. A migration from one 2nd generation platform (TDMA) to another 2nd Generation platform (GSM) would do nothing to increase capacity or offer new services like gps, Packet Video, 2X capacity (1x MC CDMA), high speed internet, etc...
