Whatever happens, in the end, democracy wins. Seoul, Korea: Chosun Ilbo Editorial: The US Presidential Election Article Text In Its Entirety The US Presidential election is an unusual situation indeed. American news media announced Republican Party candidate George W. Bush the winner only to retract these statements. Democratic Party candidate Al Gore called Bush to concede the election only to call him back and retract his comments in what has been an extraordinary election. The problem is the vote count in the State of Florida, since it is still to early to tell just who has won in electoral precincts there. The election is over, but there is still no new American president. No one knows whether, as first predicted, Bush will be declared victorious, or whether things turn around and Gore comes out on top. During this US election year, poll results constantly changed the predicted winner, making the race predictably unpredictable from the start. The confusion carried over to the election returns. The results in Florida will require a careful recount, and even American scholars of electoral politics are unable to predict what the final results will be. The birth of the next American president will require more time and pain. What is worth noting here is the accuracy and prudence of American elections, their rational election system, and the composition of supporters from both sides. Americans have full confidence in their system. They expect no mistakes, do not forgive irregularities or pranks, and wait quietly until conceding the results. One wonders how we would behave if we found ourselves in the same situation. Whatever the final results turn out to be, one remains impressed by America's process, in that it is always ready to remedy mistakes. At the core of democracy is procedure. No system is without errors. But the readiness to correct errors and do this according to institutionalized procedure will vary according to the political and social climate. The delay in the announcement of the final results of the US Presidential Election speaks of this.
