I'm not sure you're agreeing with me. The important distinction is that churches are indirectly subsidized by the State by their tax-exempt status (whether or not they do charitable work). Private universities as a nonprofit entity are generally are not church run so to mention them in the same context is wrong. The government can grant tax exemption status to any non-church charity they want but they better be careful about exemption status for CHURCHES.

This has not been subjected to a rigorous constitutional challenge largely because most people don't have a problem with it. The Supreme Court has also tended to be favorable to churches. But this long-standing tradition aside, the practice doesn't seem well-supported by the Constitution. In fact, it would seem to be the reverse. The IRS has already set a precedent by the exclusion of some churches from tax exempt status. This is de facto selection and could be interpreted to be "establishment".

1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915-1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

1935 China established gun control. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

1938 Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, 6 to 7 million Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, the mentally ill, and 12 million Christians who were unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

1970 Uganda established gun control. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
