<combjelly: It occurs to me that Intel may try to do a "P4 Lite" line.>

Wouldn't this position it squarely against the PIII? Considering that the PIII will constitute the majority of Intel's unit sales, as well as revenues, for at least the next 3 quarters, I think it would be foolish of Intel to position another chip in that segment. The P4 die is simply too big compared to the PIII (for the low-mid-end market).

combjelly:

The 1.3 gig P4 is an anemic attempt by INTC at offering an alternative in the 1 to 1.5 gig range in which demand is about to explode. Can't overstate the significance of the 1.2 gig Athy/DDR combo that AMD has just introduced to the marketplace. INTC has no counter for the Athy/DDR in the 1 to 1.5 gig range, a range that will capture big purchasing dollars in Y2001 as people upgrade from the 500 Mhz range and as new purchasers come on stream...The Athy/DDR combo offers a "new level" in computing, a "new level" occupied solely by AMD...Roles in the microprocessor market have reversed...It is now AMD who owns the top end in much the same manner INTC used to until 12 months ago...
