Why using an image is preferable:

If you have just the operating system on your C drive and your programs on other drives, problems are easy to fix.

Most problems with Windows are in the registry or something tough to fix. If your image is fresh you can just boot with a floppy and unpack the image and overwrite your C drive. Your registry is now fine and all the programs on your other drives will work, all in a matter of about 3 minutes.

Contrast this with a fresh install. Install Windows, install all the programs you had so they will register with the new registry. Oh, don't forget about downloading all the patches to the programs that have come out since you got your programs. Oops, don't forget about adjusting all the settings for each of your programs. You can't just copy Windows system files to back them up.

The last time I had to rebuild my machine it took me about a week. Finding all the programs and getting all the updates.. I now have images of all my drives sitting on another drive on my network. These images are further backed up to a tape drive. A complete rebuild of my system
would take maybe 15-20 minutes.

TIME IS MONEY

...why the maximum size was 2 gig...

Sixteen bit values. A sixteen bit number can be as large as 65,536. This is the maximum number of clusters available on a FAT-16 drive. Now the largest cluster available is 64k, or, 65,536 bytes. Given these restrictions, we have a theoretical maximum disk capacity of (65,536 * 65,536) 4,294,967,296 bytes. However, since one bit is reserved for other uses, the capacity is halved, and we get the 2 gig maximum. (Perhaps it should be re-named FAT-15?) FAT-32 drives have even more bits reserved.

Cheers, PW.
