EDIT, EDIT, EDIT! It's SO late, and I'm SO sleepy, and I thought from a glance at the shout and the exclamation points that you were arguing with my view, making the standard "only in a well-regulated militia" argument! But I see you aren't at all! Oh well, I'll leave the post below here anyway, LOL:

The subject is much, much more complex than your brief "militia" quote implies.

But it's late, and i'm not up for a new subject, and there are others here who are more articulate on this subject than I am. Lather.Rinse.Repeat has written on SI very interestingly about this subject, as has Steven Rogers. I haven't.

I have a wonderful, sane book by Akhil Reed Amar, The Bill of Rights, which I bought specifically out of interest in its second amendment scholarship. In case you're interested...

Hmmm. I thought I was linking you to Amazon.com, but I go to it through greatergood.com because then up to 15% of every purchase goes to my chosen charity. That looks like an awfully long link. You can check it out direct from Amazon.com if you're interested. It's in paper now for 16.15. The average reader review is 5 stars.

"Akhil Amar is one of the most creative thinkers in the legal academy. Not surprisingly, he has produced the best book ever written about what we call the Bill of Rights."

And now I really am going to bed, and don't plan to engage on this issue further. Too much work not getting done....
