Knowing they were up against a hard-working accomplished "Boy Scout" candidate without any skeletons in his closet the GOP were left with nothing to "assassinate" his character on but a few changes of position over 25 years and a boast or two which could be taken as exaggeration. Also, out of thousands of appearances over the years made necessary by lack of campaign finance reform and the GOP advantage in soft money, they found one instance where something might be construed as "illegal". Finally they tried their best to unfairly link him to Clinton's peccadillos with non-stop innuendos and code language. Gore entire life is an open book and his attackers exaggerate freely in trying to find minute details to attack him on. Nobody is perfect but Al deserves a hell of a lot of credit for his exemplary life and accoplishments, many of them for our general good. Meanwhile Bush's history is a virtual mystery between years 1970 and 1985 when he was reputedly an alcoholic, screwed around a lot, went AWOL from Guard duty, never held a job but drove a business into the ground and probably a lot more he's not too proud of. No wonder Bush will not discuss this "missing 15 years" of his life and his complete lack of hard work or accomplishment during that time period which is almost one-third of his life. Also, Bush's career as governor has been marked by a lack of any accomplishment. True he's very popular, but that's personality, money and image over substance all the way. Frankly, looking ahead, I doubt whether his personality and image strength will make much difference as people will look to the White House for a lot more than just posing and reeling off wise-cracks and sniggers. What they will see is a lot of familiar faces from his father's days in power and the gradual reminder that the Bush-Quayle years were not where we wanted or needed to go back to. This is all pretty surreal and nomatter how it ends expect America to be less than enthused for the next four years.
