Gore's 'official' stance on abortion was pro-life up until 1988, when he made his run at the presidency.

Then his opinion changed.

The Democratic party cannot tolerate a pro-life presidential candidate, just as the GOP cannot tolerate a pro-choice presidential candidate (hence George H.W. Bush's change in 1980, much to his wife's very public chagrin.)

Did you hear the one on how Gore voted for Gulf War? He sold his vote for GOP guarantee of a prime time slot on the Senate floor during the debate (the time slot broadcast by many networks).
