I think Clinton has deemed this "win- win", and is backing the Gore effort. It has his touch. If Gore wins, he likely loses in 4 years, and by the next presidential election Hillary will have a term and a half under her belt. Clinton knows that Gore cannot handle recuperation from this debacle. He has his own case to reason from: he was so weak in '94 that the Republicans gained the Congress, and although he fought his way back to retaining his office, he could not shake the Republicans, and was tied up much of the time engaged in mere survival. Gore is in worse shape, in fact, having 8 years of "peace and prosperity" to take credit for, being up against a comparative rookie, being the man with the "golden resume", and yet losing his home state, Clinton's home state, and, if he gets in, doing so in an irreparably tainted election (there was plenty the Republicans could have challenged), and by, in essence, outlawyering his opponents. Gore is in for a bad time, still saddled with a Republican Congress, and, if one adds the "Blue Dog" Democrats, one listing to the Right. He does not have the talent or gumption to survive. Only luck could save him..........
