Actually, the proper analogy is to John Brown, who took the law into his own hands and resorted to violence in opposition to a practice that tormented his conscience. Abraham Lincoln was right to say that such anarchy could not be permitted, or the rule of law was doomed, but there is also reason that he is viewed with some sympathy........
