SS really is already a kind of rescue vehicle. To say that someone is "living on SS" is to say "poor." The only way to make the system politically acceptable was to sell it as a reirement program. For some, it will pay for wine and other forms of booze and a really nice vacation trip every year; for others it means the difference between living with a little comfort and starving or freezing. So even though I don't really need it, the fact is that I will get something, at least, out of the system and don't feel that I am being forced to provide charity. I know this is self-deception, but so much of life is self-deception that it doesn't bother me much.
