We would be delighted to discuss the matter further with Mr. Crowe and his technical staff. ``Mr. Crowe also implies my company sent him a 'hefty bill' for speaking at one of my conferences. First of all, we do not charge people to speak at any of my conferences. Never have and never will. I did, in fact, invite Mr. Crowe -- as well as the leaders of perhaps 300 other technology organizations -- to present an address at one or another of my conferences this year. ``Second, my business organization did, in fact, discuss with Level 3 -- as well as dozens of other technology organizations -- sponsorship opportunities for one or another of my conferences this year. Sponsorships are a form of paid advertising resembling magazine space ads, which can benefit the sponsoring companies among attendees at a conference. But these ad purchases have no influence on the formation of the Telecosm list. Some organizations have taken advantage of these advertising opportunities, and many others have declined. We have never submitted a 'hefty bill' or 'a very large bill' to Level 3 for anything. ``The reasons for dropping Level 3 from the Telecosm list are debatable, and we hope Level 3 will return to the list in the future. But it will be Level 3's strategies rather than any payments that get them back there. I greatly admire Crowe as a pioneer of the Telecosm and am sure that he regrets the unfortunate, but damaging, charges he made against my publication.'' SOURCE: Gilder Publishing
