I think the key to his statement was "reference" samples.

One uses, when available, standards. On occasion, they are provided free of charge by NIH.

I often used the immunoglobulin standards. They saved me a ton of time. Nobody in their correct mind provides the standards unless they're compensated to do such.... boring, non-innovative work.

So.... that was actually the only part of the release that seemed justifiable..... I'll bet that reference standards are anxiously awaited. And the cash will be good for them, allowing some progress on "tangents". The remainder of the release was unrelated hype and advertisement for their instrument.

Not commenting on quality as an investment. I'm interested, just not interested enough to do further research, given my lack of sophistication with this sort of instrument.
