States rights are largely irrelevant these days.
Those were the days when you needed to ride a horse for three months to get across the country. If I move from LA to Delaware or Iowa does that make me a different person with different values?

The EC was placed in the constitution to protect small states from the tyranny of unruly mobs in large states.

Only partly correct. Southern states feared they would be overcome by Northern States with more population on the issue of slavery. Part of the deal was that slaves would be considered as 2/5 of a citizen so interests of Southern states would be protected. Otherwise, large Southern states like Virginia and Georgia would not have voted to ratify the Constitution. There is nothing especially noble about the framers who distrusted the masses and democracy.
