Common knowledge Bush began the primary season with $90,000,000 in large donations. That's why he turned down matching funds. Later on he got individual support but he had so much soft money to begin McCain never had a chance in hell. Mostly oil money. Fact is there's a group in Texas including many of his father's old cronies which has hundreds of millions they can put behind a candidate. After Dole lost they realized they needed someone better looking and younger to represent their interests. Although he was in no way mentally qualified for the job they approachhed him and annointed him. Their representative was George Schultz. The group includes oil companies, polluting industry, Bectel, Brown + Root and others. This isn't Wall Street it's what used to be called the military-industrial complex. Nobody was more surprised than GW about reaching this pinnacle. At age 40 he felt he was washed up. At age 46 he felt he had failed because they wouldn't let him be baseball commissioner. That's when he was first approached to run against Anne Richards. The amount of money behind Bush then broke all records. He's been breaking those same records every time since. Notice though you never hear about these people. Do some research though and you'll find out how the process works. It's all about money combined with a pretty face.
