If it's the economy stupid then Gore should have won by a landslide. Economy is important but charisma and money are the two keys these days. Because with charisma you can deflect reality and with money you can confuse the issues with negative and dishonest ads by the thousands. Even though I've always admired Gore for his environmental work and brilliance I have always been concerned about his stony prsonality (at least in public, oftentimes). Bush on the other hand couldn't care less about issues but could charm the panties off a nun. As could Reagan and Clinton. Teflon combined with money wins. That will never really change but it's gotten to a ridiculous point. Again McCain should have been the GOP nominee, or at least should have gone all the way to the convention. He was never given a chance though, was he? And why? In his case, just MONEY-MONEY-MONEY - an avalanche of it with all the party machinery behind it. The last thing they wanted was campaign finance reform, then they used McCain to help Bush. Hypocritical as hell. I'm sure McCain is burning mad. He'll be back after GW fails.
