Libertarians always seem to think freedom has to be carried so far it is no longer free.

Libertarians are far from a monolithic bunch, but I think you'd find very few who advocate true anarchy (the total absence of any government or law). As Bernard Levy has stated, this country was founded as a republic, based upon a constitution and a bill of rights. The United States of today has become far removed from that original concept. Libertarians (classic liberals) realize the value of freedom to life and progress and the human spirit and work to retain what freedoms we still have and restore what we've lost.
