"Could you explain why both China Unicom and China Telecom are implementing GPRS if 1xEV-DV is a sure bet?"
----------

GPRS is a cheap upgrade - and will service existing GSM networks for the time being - and at least get them to packet data.

It isn't time for the expensive GSM upgrade - any more than it would be if they were still considering wCDMA. (By the way, 1x EV-DV is scheduled for Standard approval about June 2001.)

Now is the time for local, indigenous manufacturers to ramp CDMA networks. This is what we will learn about in detail mid December.
