Since most folks are responsible and don't drink before working, why would that be the company's burden? If you have some proof that the company knew or should have known that he was likely to be drunk then it's a different story. But if they knew that, then they should have discouraged him by removing him from the job.

Hmm, he drove it into a reef because he was in a drunken stupor...it wasn't like it occured due to mechanical failure.
