You don't get it. There IS no more real state identity anymore, nor militias, nor border wars. There are different sales taxes, that's about it. The right of every citizen to have a vote that counts nomatter which state you live in or move to means a lot more. Pick a state and there are completely different types of people living in different parts of it. Cities versus rural maybe. Even in those cases it is a motley crew. Bottomline all individual votes should be equal. That's the only definition of democracy I can understand. being against that is indefensible.
