Arlen Specter (R) and Dick Durbin (D) have started the machinery to amend the Constitution. It is a healty debate which will focus the attention of the public on the anti-democratic aspect of the electoral college. The debate will not end. It will continue for the next four years and dominate political discussion.

Well, you know, when all this started, I was thinking "perhaps the EC is an anachronism, although it is the rule for this election". Then, I started staring at the electoral map, and saying to myself, "There is no way that we could let just one region elect the president, or have only the largest states be his base, he has to have support spread wider around the country." Of course, the only way to do this is to continue with the electoral college. Thus, I have come to the conclusion that abolition is not the answer. If one wants to give the winner of the popular count some bonus electors, so that there is ultimate agreement between the two votes, that might work. Of course, in an election like this, that might be little help, since the winner of the popular vote cannot be determined without finishing the absentee vote, recounting all close districts throughout the country, and litigating all irregularities. Thus, anyone who wants to hold things up for an indefinite period could still do so...........
