Keith - its not about statistical error; its about counting the votes the machines rejected. Even without human intervention, the canvassers are required to divine intent from an incomplete ballot. To me, that's and impossibility; we have machines to remove the subjectivity from the process. However, a manual recount of the entire state, as proposed tonight by Gore, represents the politically attractive solution, especially coupled with his pledge to abide by the results. It still requires somehow a waiver of the statutory deadlines on the other counties, but I suppose, with the Solomonic wisdom of the Florida Supreme Court, somehow it can be done. Awfully difficult for Bush to refuse. The goose is cooking; I hope it's Gore's.
