Applied Materials (AMAT) 42 3/4 +1 5/16: -- Update -- Sees flattening effect, near-term, with respect to gross margins due to the ramp in 300mm product shipments; noted that revenues for 300mm will be less than $100 mln in 1Q01... AMAT up 3/4 in after hours trading.

Applied Materials (AMAT) 42 3/4 +1 5/16: -- Update -- Believes capital spending next year will grow in line with semiconductor sales growth (i.e. 20%)... in the past, AMAT had projected that it expected 30% capital spending growth, but reduction is consistent with recent revisions that have been made on account of weaker end market demand for chip makers and contraction in global GDP growth

Applied Materials (AMAT) 42 3/4 +1 5/16: -- Update -- Salomon Smith Barney out with a note on AMAT's quarter. SSMB says: revenues were light at $2.92 billion, compared to our estimate of $3.0 billion and consensus estimates of $2.96 billion. Net income was $0.77 per diluted share, a sequential increase of 10%, higher than ours and consensus estimates of $0.76 per share. Gross margins came in at 51.7%, versus our estimates of 50.7%, offsetting the lower than expected revenues. Bookings were $3.6 billion. Backlog was $4.38 bln, an increase from $3.69 billion at the end of July.

Applied Materials (AMAT) 42 3/4 +1 5/16: -- Update -- Provides following guidance for 1Q01: EPS to be in range of $0.75-$0.78... current First Call consensus is $0.81; expects revenues to be $2.90B-$2.95B; gross margins to exceed 50% and operating margins to exceed 30%; book-to-bill also expected to exceed 1:1
