Alski,

uh oh...you asked a question.
"Is the view of the masses in a few densely populated areas really what's best for the whole country? Maybe a system that gives the lesser populated regions a little extra clout isn't all that bad?"
Nevada can be considered a relatively "lesser populated" region. BUT...the densely populated areas within Nevada (Las Vegas and Reno) control the vote there. Same with all the other lesser populated staes.
Wyoming has 1/69 the population of CA but has 1/18 the electoral college weighting. What gives each voter in Wyoming an inherent power to cast a vote that is 4 times more effective than each Californian?
If 80% of the population decided to live in Iowa, it would only make sense that whichever way Iowa voted would call the shots.
Minority voice is fine but take Italy for example...they have over 20 political parties representing minority views. They've also had 20 or 30 different governments in the last 30 yrs. Minority views are in the minority for a reason.
There are NO other elections in this country that use anything but a straight popular vote other than the presidential election. Mayors, state representatives, senators, congressmen, city council members, etc, etc are all elected by popular vote. It doesn't make sense that the highest office in the land, which is also the furthest removed from personally affecting you or me, should be decided on a completely different basis than all other elected officials.

Ok...done for now,
Doug R
