None of the Above...

Yes I wrote it...thanks.

Obviously I agree with the bulk of your post. But it is very important to realize that the media are highly paid concubines. They, like our political leaders, are reflecting back what they think will sell to the masses. Is there anything Machiavellian in their message? I'm sure at some levels there is. But we become co-conspirators in this. We have, by and large, lost our ability to think objectively as individuals or as a Nation. We insist on simplistic solutions to complex questions.

Objectification of those that disagree with us is easy. Polarizing contentious debate is exciting. What can we conclude? We as a society are bored and lazy. We have lost our national purpose. We have not been visited with the notion of collective sacrifice that our parents endured with WWII. We get everything easy and we expect prosperity as a birthright. We are arrogant and selfish as a Nation. All of these problems are ones bred from success. This is the normal 'fat and happy' syndrome that frequently presages collective angst and introspection. Maybe we are starting to enter that stage now. In the end it will be good for our democracy if it enlarges the debate and adds voices to the choir.

As far as not voting, I think we all have a duty to vote, even if we don't like the choices. As Jesse Ventura said, politics on the local level can have a much greater effect on our daily lives than state or national politics. Even if you only vote on a local proposition and nothing else, please don't abdicate your responsibility to participate in this great enterprise. We need all voices to be heard. By not participating you are allowing the powers that be to usurp the little voice you still have. Maybe that is ultimately the game plan. But we don't have to play.

Chin up...democracy is messy business...
