I've heard two arguments against network based solutions. The first involves privacy. I've read elsewhere that network based solutions are always on whereas terminal based solutions can be turned off. The other is that since network based solutions involve the installation of hardware, which is labor intensive, upgrading will be equally cumbersome. GPS doesn't work if you don't have line of sight to three, I think, GPS satellites and doesn't work when the user is inside a building or in an urban area. SnapTrack has developed a GPS chip that it claims is sensitive enough to detect the GPS signal in these situations, which makes them unique among GPS location services companies.
