The very same cards were run through the very same machines two times. There was a big enough difference in the numbers that they put out to justify a hand recount. A hand recount is acknowledged by almost all experts (Dems and Reps) as being the most accurate and reliable way to arrive at the real total or at least the closest that can be done. That is all Gore is asking for, as accurate of a count as can be found.
