I didn't say Bush is serious about uniting the nation. I said that neither candidate will be able to unite the nation. I also said that there was nothing going on in Florida other than pure partisan politics. The Republicans control the Governors office and the Secretary of State, while the Democrats control the Attorney General and the court system. Everyone's actions so far have been pretty predictable, though some have been a little clever. Harris' decision to impose a deadline was clever, as was the Florida Supreme Court's maneuver of not giving a reason for their decision, thus preventing an appeal. All things being even, I'd say that the Democrat Supreme Court will control and that Gore will be allowed to recount until he wins. The only wild card is whether the US Supreme Court will get involved in a state issue. As someone who didn't vote for either candidate I sit back watching in morbid disgust. Recent polls show that 49% of people disapprove of Gore's conduct and 40% disapprove of Bush's conduct. By the time it is done both candidates could be well over 60%. Then how do they lead?
